On 22nd October 2005, Skillshare International supporters and returned development workers gathered in Leicester to find out more about development awareness activities in the UK. In addition to our development awareness programme, Skillshare International also hosts and supports the East Midlands Network for Global Perspectives in Schools.

East Midlands Network for Global Perspectives in Schools (EMNGPS)
EMNGPS is a partnership of organisations actively involved in promoting global ciizenship and sustainable development. It is funded by the Department for International Develpment (DFID), and its aim is to raise levels of development awareness in schools, and meet the Millenium Development Goals.

EMNGPS works with schools, teachers and other organisations with and interest in the education of young people in the East Midlands in the area of global awareness through:

  •  curriculum development
  •  professional development for educators
  •  capacity development for organisations
  •  learning and dissemination

EMNGPS believe that teaching about global perspectives should go beyond knowledge and understanding of the issues but also develop attitudes and values to bring about change for a more just world. Young people must be encouraged to feel they can and will make a difference. EMNGPS uses participatory and inclusive methodology, reflecting good practice in development education.

What EMNGPS offers:

  •  Training for teachers in approaching and implementing aspect of global citizenship and  sustainable development in school
     
  •  Regional events to share good practice with others
     
  •  A chance to raise the global agenda with policy makers and others involved in education
     
  •  Information and training on the British Council Global Schools Partnerships and the  International Schools Award
     
  •  Teachers the chance to disseminate information about their activities and events through  newsletters
     
  •  Access to resources to support class room activities
