Developing Strategies to Eliminate Gender Based Violence

We are working with partners in Swaziland and beyond to challenge and eliminate gender based violence. On 24th-27th April 2007, Skillshare International held a Gender Based Violence (GBV) workshop in South Africa to promote best practice and share experiences.  Twenty nine participants from Zimbabwe, Swaziland, South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana and Canada attended the workshop, which was funded by CIDA through Canadian Crossroads International.

The overall purpose of the workshop was to promote learning in the area of gender based violence and to document lessons learned by the participating NGOs from eight countries.

It was also an opportunity for them to work together to develop strategies to advocate for the elimination of gender violence and to explore the links between HIV and GBV.

Participants also discussed the evolving faces of GBV, focusing on the issues of human trafficking, child-headed households and migrant labour.

Campaigning against gender based violence in Swaziland.

Participants agreed to establish a regional coordination body to respond to GBV issues at a regional level.  Further research will be conducted in to trafficking and child labour and the participating organisations agreed to develop their advocacy work.

Skillshare International committed to play a coordination role for NGOs working to eliminate gender based violence.  We will also work with organisations in Southern Africa to build their capacity through our leadership development programme and development worker placements.
