Valedictory for Alexandra Giddings

Alexandra Giddings

Alexandra Giddings volunteered on the International Citizen Service (ICS) programme through Skillshare International. Sadly, she passed away on May 15th, 2015 just 2 weeks after returning from her placement at the community based organisation ABC for Life, in Cape Town, South Africa. She was just 19 years old.

Alexandra made a huge difference to the lives of disadvantaged children in South Africa and helped them on their way to a better future. She was popular, enthusiastic, dedicated and successful in her placement. Our staff, project partners, her fellow volunteers and the children she worked with held her in very high regard. She will truly be missed.

We would like to echo the sentiments of one of Alexandra’s Team Leader’s Jed Haney, ‘The world has lost one of the greatest girls I have had the privilege of knowing. She was incredible, caring, kind, funny and would always take the needs of others into consideration before herself!’ Team Leader Dan Hancock said, ‘She touched the lives of friends, children and families over the past three months and I was proud of her’.

Alexandra’s family said, ‘Alexandra was known for the exuberance she brought to her social life. She was a social butterfly having a wide and varied group of friends. She was beautiful inside and out and the glue that held all the friendship groups together’.

Alexandra volunteered with ABC for Life, which works to support struggling students to achieve their potential through out-of-class activities, tuition and personal support.

Following the wishes of Alan, Sue and Rebecca Giddings, Skillshare International has established a special project fund in memory of Alexandra. The intention of this fund is to support the work of the organisation – ABC for Life - and the local community in Cape Town, South Africa, where Alexandra volunteered in early 2015.

This is just one way that Alexandra's legacy will continue.
